    Exploring the pedagogic culture of creative play in early childhood education

    We present a conceptual analysis, grounded in empirical data, of how young children's creative play is framed by the 'pedagogic culture' within which the child is playing. Drawing on data from a research study with the broad aim of documenting children's creative play in Western play-based early childhood education, we gathered exploratory qualitative observations, self-initiated iPad video diaries and researcher-led activities to describe children's creative play. We adapted the Analysing Children's Creative Thinking Framework as a starting point for coding and the analyses focused on three contextual cues within the pedagogic culture – space, interpersonal collaborations and materials. We ground our discussion in a contextualist theoretical frame to demonstrate that in isolation, each contextual cue presents a degree of framing to children's creative play. When analysed as a synergy of contextual cues, however, we begin to see that the dynamic make-up of each of the contexts, and the interplay among them, create a 'pedagogic culture' that transforms children's creative play. We present 'stories' of each pedagogic culture that we observed, to describe how children's creative play manifested within each culture

    Lessons from using iPads to understand young children's creativity

    This paper explores how iPads can be used as part of a child-centred data collection approach to understanding young children’s creativity. Evidence is presented from a pilot study about 3- to 5-year-old children’s creative play. Researchers’ reflective accounts of children’s engagement with iPad video diaries and free to use apps were logged across two early educational settings over a three-month period. Findings suggest that iPads offer a mechanism to allow children to express their creative play and to encourage involvement in the research process. However, bespoke research software to use with early years children is required to improve this process

    Heat shock protein 90 inhibition abrogates TLR4-mediated NF-kB activity and reduces renal ischemia-reperfusion injury

    Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common cause of acute kidney injury. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mediates sterile inflammation following renal IRI. Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) inhibition is a potential strategy to reduce IRI, and AT13387 is a novel Hsp90 inhibitor with low toxicity. This study assessed if pre-treatment with AT13387 could reduce renal IRI and established if the mechanism of protection involved a reduction in inflammatory signalling. Mice were pre-treated with AT13387 prior to renal IRI. 24 h later, renal function was determined by serum creatinine, kidney damage by tubular necrosis score, renal TLR4 expression by PCR and inflammation by cytokine array. In vitro, human embryonic kidney cells were co-transfected to express TLR4 and a secreted alkaline phosphatase NF-κB reporter. Cells were pre-treated with AT13387 and exposed to endotoxin-free hyaluronan to stimulate sterile TLR4-specific NF-κB inflammatory activation. Following renal IRI, AT13387 significantly reduced serum creatinine, tubular necrosis, TLR4 expression and NF-κB-dependent chemokines. In vitro, AT13387-treatment resulted in breakdown of IκB kinase, which abolished TLR4-mediated NF-κB activation by hyaluronan. AT13387 is a new agent with translational potential that reduces renal IRI. The mechanism of protection may involve breakdown of IκB kinase and repression of TLR4-mediated NF-κB inflammatory activity

    Developing health science students into integrated health professionals: a practical tool for learning

    BACKGROUND:An integrated sense of professionalism enables health professionals to draw on relevant knowledge in context and to apply a set of professional responsibilities and ethical principles in the midst of changing work environments 12. Inculcating professionalism is therefore a critical goal of health professional education. Two multi-professional courses for first year Health Science students at the University of Cape Town, South Africa aim to lay the foundation for becoming an integrated health professional 3. In these courses a diagram depicting the domains of the integrated health professional is used to focus the content of small group experiential exercises towards an appreciation of professionalism. The diagram serves as an organising framework for conceptualising an emerging professional identity and for directing learning towards the domains of 'self as professional' 45.OBJECTIVE:This paper describes how a diagrammatic representation of the core elements of an integrated health professional is used as a template for framing course content and for organising student learning. Based on the assumption that all health care professionals should be knowledgeable, empathic and reflective, the diagram provides students and educators with a visual tool for investigating the subjective and objective dimensions of professionalism. The use of the diagram as an integrating point of reference for individual and small group learning is described and substantiated with relevant literature. CONCLUSION: The authors have applied the diagram with positive impact for the past six years with students and educators reporting that "it just makes sense". The article includes plans for formal evaluation. Evaluation to date is based on preliminary, informal feedback on the value of the diagram as a tool for capturing the domains of professionalism at an early stage in the undergraduate education of health professional students
